How I'm saving $1238.50 this year by changing how I watch TV!

Well I've finally did it.  We decided to try to cut back on expenses and after taking a look at everything we decided to get rid of cable TV.  What prompted it was last month I decided to call my cable company to ask them to lower my bill.  (I've heard of other people doing this and it working....) Well when I called after about 10 minutes of automated prompts before finally getting a human I was told that there was nothing they could do.  So I hung up and forgot about it until I received my next bill.  The nerve, some how the cable company INCREASED my bill by $12.  Bringing my total bill from the previous $159 per month to $171 per month!  This amount is for my cable and internet combined but I still think it is way too high!  So after doing some research and talking with some friends who have recently gotten rid of cable TV I decided to take the plunge.  I called and canceled my cable and got them to lower my internet bill to match a competitive price by another provider in town.  So now I will just be paying $35 for my internet.  As for TV I placed an order on Amazon to hook me up.

I now have 2 TV antennas, 2 Roku Boxes which cost me $196.46 and shipping was FREE because I used super saver shipping.

I already am a streaming Netflix member and that costs me $8.43 per month and have just signed up for Hulu Plus which is $7.99 per month both of which I will be able to watch on my TV with the Roku Boxes.

So a year of Netflix and Hulu Plus will cost me $197.04 add in the initial investment of the Roku Boxes and TV antennas and that puts me at a total of $393.50 for a year of TV vs the $1632 I would have paid to my cable company if I had stayed with them for another year!  I will be saving over $1238.50 the first year and after that since I will already have the equipment I'll be saving $1434.96!  That's a HUGE savings and it feels good to no longer be at the mercy of monopoly cable companies!

Need some more information?

First find out what channels you can get with an antenna.  I wanted to make sure we got all the local ABC/NBC/CBS channels before I decided to cut our cable.  Turns out in my area we get 10 digital channels!  I get ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX/CW/PBS and a few more local channels.  In addition it appears I'm getting 2 different music type channels that I've never heard of before.

To find out what channels you can get with an antenna head over to this website AntennaWeb and enter your address.

These are the Antenna's I've picked up from Amazon .  These are RCA Basic Indoor Antennas and sell for just $8.30 each!

Then I went also to Amazon and ordered my Roku boxes.  I like having TV in the bedroom and living room which is why we got two.  There are 4 different models of Roku.  The lowest priced one starts out at $44.99 and the most expensive is $89.99 through Amazon.  Click HERE to see the differences between each model and price level.
We decided to go with the $89.99 one.  What I like about it is it has an enhanced remote with motion control for games and comes with a FREE full edition of Angry Birds.  We don't own any game consoles in our house, so I liked the idea that we can play games on this as well.  Kills two birds with one stone! hehe

This is the Roku we bought it is the Roku 2 XS 1080p Streaming Player for $89.99.
